Chapter Eight

Elliot bounced Henry in his arms as he listened to the most interesting minister he had ever seen give a sermon on loving thy neighbor. Considering the man was advocating kindness and understanding, Elliot found the sheer size of the tattooed man a contradiction in stereotypes. Benjamin Brody didn’t look anything like Elliot thought a minister would look, and yet the man’s words seemed to have a bigger impact on the people listening than any sermon Elliot had ever heard.

Elliot would be the first to admit he hadn’t wanted to go to church when Mitch talked to him about it. He’d had enough good Christian intentions shoved down his throat to last him a lifetime. But, by the time services were over and Mitch was escorting him and Hannah toward the front doors of the church, Elliot was actually glad he had attended Sunday services.

“Brody.” Mitch nodded to the man when they stopped at the double doors to shake his hand. “This is Elliot, my fiancé, and his children, Hannah and Henry. The one with the stunned expression there is Jonny, Elliot’s brother.”

“Dude, your tats are—” Jonny’s mouth snapped shut as if he just realized he was talking to a minister.

But the larger man chuckled and pulled up one sleeve. “I just got this one done last week to celebrate my wedding anniversary. Neason has been bugging me for ages to get something special done that he could have done as well. His isn’t exactly the same as mine, but they complement each other well.”

“Neason?” Elliot had no clue who that was.

“Did I hear my name being called?” asked a green-eyed man with the thickest glasses Elliot had ever seen. The man stepped up beside the minister and pursed his lips as he tilted his head up for a kiss. Elliot was pretty sure his eyes bugged when the minister leaned down and kissed the man.

“Hello, love,” Brody said when they came up for air. “I was just telling Jonny here about our matching tattoos,”

“Yeah?” Neason chuckled. “I’d show you mine but it’s on my back and taking off my shirt in front of the Cade Creek Quilting Club is just asking for trouble.”

Elliot grimaced. “That bad?”

“Last time, I ended up with so many pinch marks I looked like a pin cushion.” He rubbed his chest as if in remembered pain. “Those little old ladies are brutal.”

Elliot laughed nervously as he shot Mitch a look. The little old ladies of Cade Creek were bad because they pinched guys with no shirts? That was it? “Is there anyone else we should be worried about?”

“Ma,” both Neason and Brody said at the very same time.

“Ma?” Again, someone Elliot didn’t know.

“My mother,” Neason said. “Alani Blaecleah.”

“But I’ve met her,” Elliot replied. “She seemed very nice.”

“Oh, she is,” Neason was quick to say, but then he nodded to the sleeping infant in Elliot’s arms. “Just don’t let her get her hands on that baby. You might never get him back.”

Elliot stared then burst out laughing.
